Our Ephesians 6.10–13 reading urges strength in the Lord and wearing the full armor of God to stand against the devil’s schemes. Submission and unity precede this call to spiritual warfare, requiring complete equipment to resist evil. We learned from this text that the struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the devil’s schemes and spiritual forces. Pastor Whit reminded us that Christians must wear God’s full armor to stand firm, avoid demonizing others, and act as healers. The devil and demons are real, despite the world’s desire and the devil’s preference to think and act otherwise. Spiritual evil divides or distracts; the devil uses false religion like a shell to either appeal and appease, or to divide and destroy. We must stand firm with God’s armor against deception. Using Matthew 22.15-22, Pastor Whit’s message covered the conspiracy of the Pharisees and Herodians to trap Jesus in His verdict on whether or not it was lawful to pay the imperial tax. Knowing their thoughts and evil intent, Jesus called on them to give to Caesar what is his, but to Give to God what is God’s. Only Jesus can achieve for us salvation unto God. Because the knowledge of Christ's death and resurrection is incomparable and because that resurrection power is what changes us, we're asked if we know that power for ourselves. Pastor Whit walked us through Exodus 17.1-7. At the Lord’s command, Israel moved from the wilderness of sin to Rephadim and argued with Moses over thirst. Moses appealed to the Lord; God instructed him to strike a rock with the staff used on the Nile, producing water. Moses strikes the rock and God supplies water despite grumbling. The purpose is worship, not complaint; focusing on problems becomes idolatry. God’s mercy persists, yet Israel returns to fear. Hunger for righteousness brings filling; otherwise, doubt persists. Hunger and thirst for righteousness require worship through humility and trust. Exodus 17 marks a place of testing and argument where God provided water; returning there enables learning. Pastor Whit walked us through the parable in Matthew 20 that follows a landowner paying equal wages, illustrating reversal. The parable is a response to the rich young ruler in Matthew 19, who seeks eternal life through deeds but refuses to sell all his possessions. Jesus emphasizes God’s sufficiency for all things and challenges the man. The disciples, too, care about what they will receive and how they will receive it. Jesus is interested in all who work for Him finding God's gift of eternal life as being enough, as being sufficient.
